The Magical World of Charms
Love Jewelry July 10th, 2007
Charms have been around since the Neolithic era, when man would collect stones to attach to his wrists and use them to protect himself against enemies. Eventually, this led to the belief that certain stones were used to ward off evil spirits. As time progressed, the popularity of charms grew and they were made with more intricate and elaborate designs so they could be worn as jewelry. From the time of the Egyptians to the reign of Queen Victoria in 1865, charms have been part of tradition that people still use up to this very day.
However, certain tribes and religions around the world have made use of charms to accompany spells throughout history. Many of them are still around, and still believe in the power of charms, and actively use them in their daily lives. Charms have been imbibed in their culture, whether to protect themselves against evil or bring about good.
The evolution of charms has brought about various uses for them, such as love charms and fertility charms. Today, charms are used for other fun things rather than to ward off spirits or to ask for special favors. It is now part of pop culture, can be used as a status symbol, and used to express oneself through fashion. You can still hear people call certain accessories of theirs “lucky charmsâ€.
Charms come in all shapes and sizes, colors, various types of precious and semi-precious gems, with many intricate designs. They can be worn on the neck or in a bracelet. Charm bracelets gained popularity sometime in the 1950’s, and are considered a meaningful possession to the ladies that wore them. Each charm in the bracelet was of an object that represented a significant person, time, or aspect of one’s life, and thus was considered very precious, even up to this day.
